Welcome to the New Century and Milennium
Happy New Year to all you philosophers! Please forgive this brief note but extenuating circumstances have required that only a brief notice be given for the upcoming meeting on January 12, 2000. Our topic will be Euthanasia. It will be presented by Ileana Gram, Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
Our meeting will begin at 7:30 pm as usual. Following the presentation, there will be a period of questions and answers for Dr. Gram. Our respondent for the evening will be Dr. Don Emon. After Don's presentation, there will be a moderated discussion of the subject with the audience.
Please come and help us initiate philosophy into the new year, new century and new millennium. I believe an appreciation and interest in philosophy in general is growing everywhere and we are only a small part of it. Our material wealth, our success in overcoming so many obstacles to life, have left us alert, comfortable and conscious, again asking: "what is it all about?"
Come, listen, think, suggest, discuss and even argue. What could be a better subject for wrangling and discussion than mercy killing, called Euthanasia? We wouldn't let dogs or horses suffer as much as we allow human beings to suffer the almost unendurable pains and hopeless situations that some find themselves in. What would you want done to yourself, your mother, your son, your best friend? Where do the heart and the intellect clash? Where do law and common sense conflict? Many, if not all of us, will soon enough find ourselves in situations in which this may be at least a theoretical consideration. See you next Wednesday evening.
Cordially,
Al Iosue
